The Kotmadam

The Kotmadam

The Kotmadam is a statue, part of the Old Market in Leuven, made by Fred Bellefroid.

The statue was inaugurated on 16 May 1985. It was a gift from the VVV to the town of Leuven (worth 800,000 Bfr), but an original idea from the Marktrock committee. The inauguration was attended by Maria Swerts, the then oldest Leuven landlady and also godmother of the statue. Despite the amusing character of the statue, the Kotmadam initially evoked mixed feelings. The figure depicted did not correspond to the typical image of a kotmadam: old and slender[source]. On the contrary, the kotmadam on the Old Market is a youthful, attractive lady.
